Saving with Getty Images:
Getty Images was founded in 1995 by Mark Getty, and became the first company to offer stock photos online. Since it’s founding, it has acquired and purchased dozens of smaller stock photo and archive companies. Getty Images then digitized their archives, which allowed for them to be used for online material. It currently has over 80 million stills and illustrations.
Getty Images has also expanded beyond stock images: they offer video, music and sound effects for use in all kinds of production.
They are currently based out of Seattle, Washington. Getty Images was sold to the Carlyle Group in 2012 for $3.3 Billion.
Getty Images Pricing
Being that Getty Images specializes in high end images for creative projects, marketing, print media, video production, art, and more their prices are a little higher than your average stock photography website. However, they are often the exclusive rights-holders for certain images. If you just need a few low-res photos for a business website then this is definitely not your most cost-effective option, but if you are looking for bright, colourful, and creative imagery for a magazine or marketing campaign then Getty Images will have what you need. Here is the breakdown on how their pricing works:
Low-Res Photos & Videos for the Web
- 1 photo or video – $175
- 5 photos or videos – $800 ($160/photo or video)
- 10 photos or videos – $1500 ($150/photo or video)
Medium-Resolution Photos & Standard Definition Videos
- 1 photo or video – $375
- 5 photos or videos – $1625 ($325/photo or video)
- 10 photos or videos – $3000 ($300/photo or video)
High-Res Photos & High Definition/4K Videos
- 1 photo or video – $175
- 5 photos or videos – $800 ($160/photo or video)
- 10 photos or videos – $1500 ($150/photo or video)
So as you can see the price per photo or video is more than what you would pay on their sister site iStockPhoto for example, but Getty Images has a different sort of photo and serves a higher end market that is looking for more creative and artistic photos and videos. Take a quick look through their galleries, there are some truly stunning images in there, they are also who you can go to if you need to license a photo of a celebrity, piece of art, or images from film and television. Even if it’s not on their website, get in touch with them and they should be able to work something out for you in your budget.
