GoDaddy is the world’s largest domain registrar and, unless you have been living under a rock in a remote part of the world for the last two decades, it is highly likely you know who they are…even if you have never had the need to register a website or required hosting before.
The GoDaddy mantra of ‘hustle, adapt, listen, repeat’ is one that they live by and even though it might be contradictory in its very nature, it is one that they have followed.
Take the infamous GoDaddy Super Bowl advertisements for example. We are talking about the ones that company founder Bob Parsons himself described as intentionally ‘mildly inappropriate’. These ads helped build huge brand awareness for GoDaddy between 2005 and 2013 until they eventually moved away from these advertisements in 2016 after being previously labeled ‘cheesy’ by The New York Times.
They may have listened and adapted, but they certainly didn’t repeat their marketing mistakes in a bid to improve their brand image.
GoDaddy is the market-leading provider of domain registrations worldwide and has over 73,000,000 registered across the globe with over 17,000,000 different customers. They operate from 14 different locations with offices in Silicon Valley, Cambridge, Hyderabad and Phoenix to name but a few.
They have come a very long way indeed since then CEO Bob Parsons founded the company under the name Jomax Technologies, of course one of the most notable developments being the name change to GoDaddy in 1999 – a shrewd move and a name that is much easier on the tongue I am sure you will agree.
GoDaddy now offers all kinds of services from domain registration to hosting and from email management to online bookkeeping – in fact, they see themselves as the right hand man of many small businesses. With 21% of the world’s domains registered with the US based company it is fair to say that they are well on their way to dominating the online space.
If you are looking for hosting there is plenty of choice with a package to suit all business types, sizes and budgets. With over 37,000 servers they certainly have capacity to support millions of businesses.
GoDaddy are partnered with Microsoft, a deal that allows them to offer leading cloud based Microsoft services such as Office 365 for managing email – something that has been a big positive for their customers.
GoDaddy has gone from strength to strength and despite their setbacks – largely due to their marketing campaigns rather than anything to do with their ability to provide a quality service (which they do admirably) – they look likely to continue to grow as they expand their digital and cloud based services in to 2018.
They have a canny knack of knowing what their customers want, package it up as something shiny and desirable and generally deliver their services on point. Their most recent acquisition of Sucuri is the latest in a long line of takeovers that includes some big (and small names) with the likes of Outright (2012), Locu (2013) and FreedomVoice (2016) just some of those acquired.
Whether you like supporting GoDaddy as a company or not, we have a lot to thank them for in terms of providing a good base level of service that other companies have to at least equal – and if it wasn’t for GoDaddy we never would have seen Jean-Claude Van Damme playing an array of musical instruments whilst doing the splits in a kitchen.
Yes, we have to agree… GoDaddy are far better at delivering industry leading website support than marketing!
