A Brief History of Media Temple:

Media Temple was founded way back in 1998 and built up a great reputation as the hosting company of choice for website development professionals. Media Temple specializes in offering professional hosting services, like Dedicated Virtual hosting, API Management and CDN’s (content delivery networks), among others.

Over the years Media Temple has worked with lots of several high profile clients, including Starbucks, Sony, NBC and the Wall Street Journal.

In late-2013, when the Healthcare.gov fiasco was making headlines, The Wall Street Journal asked Media Temple to examine and assess the troubled website.

In October 2013, Godaddy announced that they are acquiring Media Temple, but will keep Media Temple as an independent entity with its own workforce.

GoDaddy has said that the purpose behind the acquisition was to win over web professionals and designers, people who were attracted to Media Temple’s excellent reputation for reliability and professionalism. This is why Media Temple has not altered or changed their company since the acquisition, unlike many other smaller web hosting companies that have been purchased by mega-comppanies. Some customers feel that there has been a decline in the quality of service since they were purchased by GoDaddy.

Grid Hosting and GPU

So what is the difference between grid hosting and shared hosting? Grid hosting is a form of shared hosting engineered by Media Temple. It is designed to perform better, and has some extra features that you won’t always find in a standard shared hosting environment. It also means that your website isn’t on one piece of hardware, it’s spread across many processors which allows you to easily scale up and down if you get a sudden spike in traffic.

What is a GPU? It’s a measurement of the CPU (Central Processing Unit) resources that your website takes up each time it makes a request. So any activity on the server, any scripts that your website runs, and programs or applications that run on the server. You have a certain amount that you are entitled to per month and if it looks like your website(s) will go over you will receive an email letting you know. Any overages are charged at $0.10/GPU, however Media Temple states that this is incredibly rare even under heavy traffic. It’s not a policy that they often have to act on, and they do not offer any sort of pricing to pre-purchase ‘extra’ GPU just in case.

There is an area in your Media Temple hosting account control panel where you can see what your current usage is so far for the month if you would like to keep on top of it. If you are worried about going over, the easiest way to reduce your GPU usage is to optimize any scripts you are using and disable any plugins that aren’t strictly necessary.
